Maitland Gaol

We are very excited to have Maitland Gaol as one of the Childrens University Newcastle’s new Learning Destinations. When Maitland Gaol closed it was the oldest continually operating gaol in Australia. With a vibrant history spanning more than 150 years, this former maximum security prison is open for everyone to explore. It is built of sandstone and has many of the original features including cell blocks, toilets, awnings and artworks still in the original condition.

With so much learning for students to place in their passport, Maitland Gaol provides experiences for students, families and school groups. There is something for all of the family, with self-guided audio tours available seven days a week.  Adults can be led around by an ex-warden, join a historic tour to learn more about the Gaol’s past, or take a self-guided audio tour. For children, there is even their very own self-guided tour where they will get to meet Maitland Gaol’s famous ghost ‘Snitch the Rat’, as he leads you on an adventure through the gaol cells. Don’t forget the learning doesn’t stop there, check out more information on all the fun activities held every school holidays and online activities if you want to continue your learning!
