Albany Public Library

The Albany Public Library has been a Children’s University partner since January 2021. A thriving community hub for all ages, it provides endless opportunities to explore books, learn new skills and have fun! Located on York Street, in the picturesque town of Albany on the south coast of Western Australia, children and families can immerse themselves in literature and STEM inspired Lego building and creating.

Albany Public Library regularly hosts cultural enrichment activities, such as author talks and local society presentations, as well as exciting school holiday programs!

As one of the Albany’s pioneering public services, established in 1852, the seed that was planted all those years ago has blossomed into an institution that offers support to the local community and beyond!

Activities

Lego Club

Everything is awesome, with an hour of LEGO fun! With individual, group and team challenges to keep kids engaged and entertained while developing design and thinking skills. Suitable for children aged 6-12 years, it is an hour full of fun learning experiences.

Online Lego ClubLEGO loving kids can be inspired to build some great designs as the Albany Public Library sets a monthly challenge with ideas and concepts to stimulate the imagination! Each challenge card has two categories for children to choose from. For each category children complete, they earn 1 hour in their Passport to Learning.

Working Together

To encourage children to explore new books and encourage them to reflect on their reading, the Children’s University team worked with the Library to design a ‘Read and Review’ activity for CU members.

Children can borrow a book to read from the library. For non-fiction books, they can choose a topic that they are interested in learning more about. For fiction books, they can try a new author whose books they haven’t read before. Children can chat to one of the library staff for some great suggestions about what to read next.

Once they have read their book, children can complete their ‘Read and Review’ learning activity to receive up to 2 Passport hours for a maximum of 5 books (for a total of 10 hours). There are many activity options to choose from, including writing a letter to the author or creating a new book cover.
