Exploring the World of Higher Education: Mātāpuna Mātātahi I Children’s University On-Campus Experience Day

Mātāpuna Mātātahi I Children’s University (TMMCU) On-Campus Experience Day provides children, ages 7-14, the opportunity to engage in a range of fun hands-on experiences designed to broaden their interests, demystify the university environment, and spark an interest in a tertiary education. Close to 1,000 TMMCU members from 34 schools visited Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury and Te Whare Wānaka o Aoraki Lincoln University between 26-29 June 2023.

The University of Canterbury hosted 475 TMMCU members from 17 schools on campus over two days. Children participated in a range of activities to showcase the breadth of learning we offer, including building a quake-proof structure and observing a wind tunnel with the Department of Mechanical Engineering, experiencing the University’s cold room with the Gateway Antarctica Research Centre, and undertaking chemistry experiments. Children also participated in activities around Maths, Business, Product Design, UC Library’s Makerspace, Earth and Environment, Language and Culture, and Sports Health Science.

At Lincoln University, 480 members from 17 schools participated in activities including testing the flammability of different natural materials, participating in 3D printing of foodstuffs, investigating spiders, and designing their own insects. Other activities investigated fungi, food, waste management and even sheep dogs!

University student volunteers guided the children around the campus and engaged with them during the activity. A campus tour showcased some of the exciting places on campus and other activities students engage with outside of their studies, such as clubs and societies, sports and eateries.
